CloseWhat is this?
Groups.myh-r.com is a civic social network for people, groups and businesses located in Decatur IL, but what does that mean? We’re aiming to foster a local community dedicated to discussion and expression. At our sister site, herald-review.com, we cover events that our reporters and editors dig up. This site is dedicated to the stories and thoughts that happen around or adjacent to those events.

At groups.myh-r.com, every person has a personal blog, photo gallery, video gallery, and a profile. You can be as public or private as you want to in what you share. You can add other people to your friends list, as you would on sites like myspace or facebook. Click here for the full FAQ on how to manage your profile and online posts.

In addition to your individual space on groups.myh-r.com, you also have the option to join different groups within the community. Groups can be anything from a parenting discussion to a forum for Illini fans, a neighborhood watch association, or a way for local musicians to keep in touch with each other. If you’re interested in hosting an existing group with us, just let us know – it’s free and we’re happy to help. Just drop us a line or get started by clicking here.

Can I promote my Business on groups.myh-r.com?
Yes! Businesses can participate in this local community with a profile of their own. All basic business listings are free, and they’re managed by the MyH-r.com staff. To really take advantage of the groups.myh-r.com network, businesses can purchase an enhanced profile for a small monthly fee. This allows businesses to stay in touch with their most loyal customers, offer coupons, showcase products and announce special events. And since we’re connected to the well-established Herald & Review network, these profiles just might help in your search engine optimization efforts as well. If you’re interested, contact our sales staff by email at marketplace@herald-review.com or call us at (217) 421-7979.

Is there anything I can’t do?
You can post anything you’d like here, within reason. Check out terms of service for the full rundown of do’s and don’ts, but it basically boils down to common sense and common courtesy. If you wouldn’t say it in public, don’t post it in public.

I’ve been interested in following the magazine readership ad campaign “Magazines, The Power of Print.” I’ve been seeing it for a few months in many of the magazines I read, and have found the claims interesting, if somewhat dubious. The ads’ claims include a readership increase over the past five years, adults age 18-34 are “avid magazine readers” (really?), and magazine readership h...

The lineup for the upcoming “Dancing With the Stars” contest was announced earlier this week. My reaction, as it’s been for most reality show announcements, was “Meh.” But to my surprise, my Facebook and Bloglines feeds were fiery with reaction to the lineup. For the record, the show starts Sept. 20 on ABC. Those on the show will be: singers Michael Bolton and Brand...

I would never argue that a recorded album is ideal if it’s a perfect reflection of a performance. In the case I’m about to discuss, however, that’s true. Rosanne Cash’s “The List” was No. 2 last year on my top albums list (behind Mandy Moore’s “Amanda Leigh”). And seeing Cash perform in Chicago in January was easily the best show I’ve seen this year, and may be the best show I’ve seen in five ye...

I wasn’t looking forward to breastfeeding again, I have to admit I am enjoying the bonding time that I share with little Logan. The first few days in the hospital were tough. As I mentioned in my last entry, Logan was confined to the nursery at first, hooked up an IV. It made nursing more difficult at first, but with his rough start, I was glad I was giving him the best nutrition possible. Af...
As you would imagine, the last two months have flown by for me and my family. One minute, I was bringing my new son home, and before I knew it, I was back at work. In a comforting way, it is like I never left. Other than feeling 110 percent better physically. Although this pregnancy was more taxing on me than my first, the birth was pretty quick and easy. (With an epidural, that is.) I guess ...
On July 10, 2009 Governor Quinn signed a new law into effect called Senate Bill 1918 or "PIPP" where low income people will pay a percentage of their income for gas & electric. This will save lots of people lots of money (see [url=http://www.illinois.gov/PressReleases/ShowPressRelease.cfm?SubjectID=9&RecNum=7675]   This program still has not been implemented. ...
By TIM CAIN Things are looking up for mother-of-two Bridget Sibthorp-Moecker. Just in time, too. The webmaster at the Herald & Review returns to work in a little more than a week – the start of August. Newborn son Logan is two months old Friday. The family has made it through some patches that seemed like a good idea but turned a little rough – particularly a family vacation earlier t...
By TIM CAIN “I feel bad when I say some of these things, because I love my family. I just thought all of this would be different.” Into her second month of maternity leave, H&R Webmaster Bridget Sibthorp-Moecker finds herself struggling with what she thinks she should be handling better. “I was kind of looking forward to this leave,” she said this week. “I had images of enjoying the s...
